Goin to the Chapel and we’re gonna get mar-ar-ar-ied

Remember this? Today is the first day for Gay couples to officially marry in the State of California. (So happy that Maggie couldn’t extend her “distain for human rights” tentacles all the way to California.) From Freep.com, here is a story of 6 couples who helped to shape California’s new law:

The national struggle over gay marriage is taking a momentous turn this week with the first legal same-sex weddings in California. Those weddings could advance full marriage equality for gays and lesbians. Or those ceremonies could, as opponents say, mark a first step toward California voters preserving traditional marriage in November.

Whichever fork history chooses, this will be an emotional week for California: Dozens of weddings that begin at 5:01 p.m. today will multiply into thousands of marriages across the state Tuesday

And, of course, we have our own story here:

Let’s just hope that, where California goes, New York will follow.

Update: I received my information from the bill Press Show this morning, but in looking into it further, tomorrow is actually the official day-Thanks lgbtfogg.com.

Actually, I think the first marriage will take place today at 5:01PM PST, so you are technically correct.

Bess is right. Gavin Newsom has decided to allow Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon to allow today at 5:01 PM — they have been together for 55 years now and were the first same-sex couple married in San Francisco 4 years ago when Newsom ordered his city clerk to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. At 84 and 87 years of age, these two pioneers of lesbian rights can finally, FINALLY, have their relationship legitimized.

Tipping my wine glass to them tonight.

    PS: Thanks for the props…

Speaking of Bill Press - he’s coming to Greece in July for a fundraiser for the Democrats! Can’t wait to have him autograph my copy of Trainwreck: The End of the Conservative Revolution (and Not a Moment Too Soon)

I’m getting tickets for our anniversary - so it’ll be a nice night out and a great committee to support! Only wish John DiCaro could join me…

Congratulations to Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon! 55 years is a long time to wait to finally have the same rights and privileges of every other married couple in this country.

It’s about time. And pretty soon, it’ll be about time for New York too!
