NRCC shakeup - too little too late?
I’m sure exile will off other insights at the next opportunity but I was struck by this (my bold) given the recent special election house losses and lackluster fundraising by the NRCC.
Rep. Tom Cole’s authority as head of the House GOP’s campaign committee is being curtailed in the wake of three defeats in red House districts, defeats which threatened his job security as NRCC chair.
A Republican source tells Election Central that Cole and Minority Leader John Boehner announced to the House GOP Conference several changes in approach — most notably that two auditors will be appointed to provide oversight over the committee.
Yeah, the NRCC got into that financial mess so financial help is needed but unless these auditors provide substance - like provable points that the Republican philosophy is worth it - It doesn’t matter.
The NRCC needs steak not sizzle.

But Cole is the one who found the auditing problems and went public with them. The responsibility for letting financial things get out of hand lies with Tom Reynolds, which is why he isn’t running for re-election. The attempt to tar Cole with Reynolds’ problems seems to me to be an indication of just how far they are willing to go to scapegoat Cole for congressional losses. That way, they don’t have to admit that the real cause is the rapid and marked deterioration of the GOP brand.
