Hanging out with the NYSDRC

Monday night I had the pleasure of hanging out with some Livingston County members of the New York State Democratic Rural Conference.  I spoke with Jane Dodds, Treasurer of the County Committee and she informed me that 46 out of 62 counties in New York are considered rural, under 250,000 people for this definition.

I also spoke to Phil Jones, Chair of the Livingston County Democratic Committee and the Secretary of the NYSDRC.  Both Dodds and Jones were at the screening of Gunner Palace in support of Jon Powers, Democratic candidate in NY-26.

Rural voters were very important in the 2006 elections and Jon Powers is not missing out on opportunities to speak to them.  About 20 community members showed up to watch the movie and debate the merits of how to get out of Iraq and what to do about Social Security.  It was a lively debate and it showed that voters from all walks of life are motivated this election season.  Powers is out meeting them all and I suspect the rural vote will be very important this election year as well.
