LTE gets to the heart of the matter on same sex marriage

Talk about getting to the heart of the matter - check out this LTE from the D&C today from a heterosexual male who dissects the cost argument against same sex marriage.

See, it doesn’t cost any more because if everyone were heterosexual - there would be more heterosexual marriages thus “costing” the same thing - so it must be something else.  Frankly, I haven’t heard it put that way before, but have a read….

Weak arguments denying gay rights

…It doesn’t cost any more than the situation that we would have if the people opposing it got their wishes and there were no same-sex couples and somehow they were “saved.” In that hypothetical environment, those people would then have heterosexual relationships that would be equal in number. So with that mentality, there is no monetary savings. The only issue then becomes one of preference. The main issue, I believe, is that people say that it is an unnatural bond and that in the Bible or other religious beliefs, it is condemned.

Well, it is OK in that argument also because we are a country that believes in separation of church and state. So we shouldn’t have laws or rules that have their basis in religion. End of discussion. Cover them.

Great letter focusing on the singular point of cost.

this is well written. the only problem i see is that this issue is not based in logic or reasoning. if that were the case everyone would have equal rights for everything. instead, the anti arguments are rooted in ignorance, fear, hatred, and religious intolerance. all things used by a powerful few to hold sway over the masses. our goal must be to drag people into the light kicking and screaming, if need be, not to try to convince them to join us in the light.

I think the best comment anyone can make regarding this issue is the one made by the SCOTUS in Lawrence v Texas, and quoted by the California Supreme Court last week: “…times can blind us to certain truths and later generations can see that laws once thought necessary and proper in fact serve only to oppress.”

The simple fact that every single letter written is prefaced by the statement “I’m a heterosexual male”…”I am a gay man…” says it all.

When we have to clarify our sexuality prior to making our point on legislation and lawmaking, so that for the record we can identify which “side” of the issue we’re on, we have gone too far.

It’s time to revisit the Danbury Letter and Thomas Jefferson. Back to basics and upholding of all rights for all citizens is what is required.

Everything old is new again.
