A funny thing is happening to take out food
I’ve never liked styrofoam containers for food. Ever since I was a kid and some McDonalds was test marking new containers. Yeah, you guessed it instead of the hot burgers wrapped in paper, the burger was placed in a styrofoam container. Yuck - Styrofoam doesn’t breath so all that condensation made for a mushy burger - well that didn’t last long.
Anyway - I picked up a fish fry at Palmer’s Fish market this past Friday and much to my surprise - very pleasant surprise it seems that they have phased out Styrofoam containers for their fish fry. Yes the container below is made of paper.
Gone is the the hot oil collecting on the bottom of the Styrofoam and appearing to melt it. Now the oil is absorbed in the paper box. Changing containers is good news.
Then, the take out salad bar at my beloved Pittsford Wegmans is offering alternative packaging as well.
This is the bottom of the box with websites of various associations. I don’t know much about these companies or organizations but here they are.
the Green Restaurant Association
It is nice that the industry is staritng to move in this direction.
oh - and yes, these are disposable containers that probably end up in a landfill. I’m thinking that paper isn’t petroleum based and is more environementally friendly then plastics. More importantly it helps show people that there is indeed life after Styrofoam and that is a start.

Excellent! I am so glad to see this. I have always loved it when the “doggie bag” at a restaurant is either cardboard or foil (reusable) pans with a cardboard top. Both biodegradable. Hopefully this trend is the rule and not the exception.
Very cool, and great pictures.
Thanks. I wonder what other experiences people are having?
