Monroe County GOP Afraid of Losing Clerk Position

As they should be. You can tell by the way they’ve mobilized their rapid response PR tools– from the D&C commenters to local GOP blogs. They’re going to try to muddy up the water by calling Dem candidate Tom Hasman elitist, or by insinuating all kinds of nasty things about a decent guy who’s going to try to help stop Monroe County from being driven further into the ditch.

Why? Because the only thing they have to tout for their candidate Dinolfo is this (from the D&C):

One of Dinolfo’s major accomplishments was being instrumental in helping defeat Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to issue drivers licenses to illegal immigrants.

That’s it? Because, um, no. That plan, though well-intentioned, was DOA. It’s like everyone jumped on a fumbled football, then Dinolfo jumped on the top of the pile-on. Keeping her lawsuit going (at taxpayer expense) was like continuing to lay there just in case the football decided to move.

The GOP will want you to forget about the lengthy Great County Clerk Computer Crash of December ‘06, during the revenue-rich end-of-year period. They’ll want you to forget that she threw her own staff under the bus to protect her political position. And they definitely hope you wont equate that lack of management with other related computer issues, like, I dunno, identity theft?

Ask yourself an honest question: are you more likely to be victimized by undocumented workers, or having your personal & credit card info stolen? Which one do you need more “protection” from?

Expect to see lots of distractions from the GOP. Expect to see more racism and homophobia, via mailers and whisper campaigns. Lord knows, the national GOP has been using those angles for years and years. Here’s hoping that the voters can ignore those distractions in favor of good governance, like they did in the last 3 congressional special elections.

All the Dems have to do is label Cheryl Dinolfo as a fear-mongering idiot perhaps with some lit pieces showing her handing out driver’s licenses to people like Vito Fossella or a gun license to Randy Kuhl.

One of the D&C commenters actually said they were not impressed with his credentials, while others called him and intellectual elitist. I’m glad they’ve got their talking points straight :-)

As for comparing his credentials to Dinolfo’s — what was Dinolfo before being the Clerk? Oh yeah, she was a trail lawyer who just happens to be the wife of a Republican Town Justice. I guess they were full up at the Water Authority that month.

It’s sad that a candidate who has done little except tow the party line is seen as having an advantage based exclusively on her incumbency and campaign funds.

When the presidential, congressional and state senate races are factored in to the local political scene, it’s clear the Republicans are going to be stretched very thin. Not to mention the FAIR plan, Public Defender debacle and the MCC scandal.

Oh yeah, and Democrats in Monroe County have a twenty thousand person enrollment advantage.

This is shaping up to be a fun campaign season!
