Meet The Next Monroe County Clerk: Tom Hasman

By now the announcement of his candidacy will be hitting the traditional media, but RT was fortunate enough to get an interview with him earlier this week.

Tom Hasman is a Project Manager for a company who handles data security for the US government.  He’s got experience in both government and the private sector, and comes across as intelligent, knowledgeable, personable.  He was really clear on all the issues.  We threw softball and hardball questions at him, and he was unfazed, cutting through the BS on issues even as tough as Spitzer’s drivers licence proposal for undocumented workers.  Which was great to see– you know the GOP can’t wait to put that on their campaign lit this fall.

To be honest, when we met Tom, I was expecting him to be more like a politician. Instead, he comes across more as a sharp, clear-eyed, energetic businessman. Someone who can run the Clerk’s office less like just another shop in the County GOP’s empire– with political grandstanding, more lawsuits wasting taxpayer money, and poorly-handled computer crashes– and more like a way to do the county’s business 21st-century-style– safely, securely, and with innovation.

And with all the identity theft going on these days, wouldn’t you feel safer knowing your info in the county computer system is being managed by someone with vast experience on keeping that info safe?

We’ll have the interview up soon– as you’ve noticed we’ve been having technical difficulties recently.  Fortunately, it’s just a hobby for us, not mission critical like the computers at the County Clerk’s office.

Not that this is worth a whole lot, but I went to grammar school with him. I haven’t talked to him in more than 20 years. Stand up guy, great parents, huge family, would be a credit to the position.
