My favorite earmark

I found this little gem yesterday from C-SPAN.org/Capitol Hill, the White House and National Politics, and since stlo7 had asked, I thought I would present it to you:

Also phoning in is Maggie Brooks (R), County Executive, Monroe County, NY to talk about a $1 million earmark sponsored by Rep. Randy Kuhl (R-NY) for the Monroe County, New York Office of Emergency Preparedness.

Now, take a look at our Emergency Preparedness Center. Check out the facility-it almost looks like The Situation Room from the basement of The Whitehouse:

Heck, it looks more like NASA Command Center:

I’m a little curious as to what more we need for $1 million dollars, and exactly how much duct tape will it buy?

Wasn’t the Emergency Preparedness Center just redone in the last few years with all state of the art stuff? I’m confused.

Actually, being C.E.R.T. trained in this facility we learned a lot of things about the facility and what it still lacks. There are a lot of little things (maybe not so little to you and I) that an emergency preparedness center can never have too much of. Generators (remember the ice storm 1991?). Emergency vehicles. Portable medical equipment. Safety items for eyes, hands, etc. Community training resources. Recertifications. Communications.

It may look like Space Shuttle Command Center but I can assure you that, in the event of a major emergency or disaster, you’re going to be pretty darned glad that place is there and has the resources it has.

That room you showed is where all agencies that would be involved in a major event will work from. Utilities. Communications. Medical. Transportation. Military. Commerce. You name it, if it’s part of the infrastructure, it’s got a position there.

I personally think Maggie Brooks is the biggest mistake Monroe County voters have ever made, but I actually have to support this request.

    Pat,
Well, that is cetainly fair enough, and that’s why we ask the questions. Thank you for your informed input.
(It does still look like NASA, though :-)

OK, get this: I spent 18 hours in the muffdome (ice storm.) It was right after we invaded Iraq. I watched the invasion on Fox News on two of those big screens, totally surrounded by cheering Republicans. It was totally surreal and dreadful.
