How about taxing oil company windfall profits and putting the money toward developing alternative fuels, energy sources or technologies, We also need smarter growth polices. How far do we need to stretch out the counties' population.

Unfortunately state and federal politicians like Joe Robach are just playing on the fears of consumers here.

Oh, and as for increasing taxes on the fuel corporations to pay for it: Are we supposed to believe that they won't just pass it along to consumers, putting the price right back where it was? Maybe out of the goodness of their hearts....

Maybe if we ask real nice the Chinese will stop putting 6,000 private vehicles a day on the road.

My first thought was that the "Yee Haw! No Tax!" psychological effect could actually increase demand to the point that prices increased past where they were before the suspension.

Imagine if every tax-loathing Expedition driver in the country decided to hog-up over the summer driving season, knowing that gas was only tax-free for a limited time.

The tax break is a political ploy, not a solution. It's the invisible hand of Adam Smith reaching out and slapping us in the face. There's really not much that can be done about it.

Not much except all the things like better mileage, urban forms that encourage fewer, shorter trips, alternative modes of transportation, etc... all the things that the DFHs have been talking about for the last TWO DECADES. Silly, silly hippies..

I mean, holy crap! Everyone's driving pimped-out 3 ton trucks for their single-passenger 50-mile commutes, and now gas is really expensive? Who could have seen THAT coming?

N.O. flooded? No WMD & quagmire in Iraq? Sub-prime meltdown? Global warming? Who could have seen that coming.... wait. Wait a second. We saw ALL of that coming.

It's all part of the same Republican disease, kids - egregious failure to plan for the future.
