Bonnachi to challenge David Koon

Former East Rochester Mayor David Bonnachi will challenge David Koon in State Assembly District 135, says Sean Carroll of Channel 13 news:

Sources close to David Bonnachi confirm for me that a run at the New York State Assembly is in the cards for East Rochester’s former mayor. More specifically, the 135th Assembly seat currently held by David Koon.

[...]

Bonnachi was originally elected as a Democrat in East Rochester. In 2000 he swapped parties, saying at the time, “I cannot, in good conscience, remain affiliated with the same party as Hillary Clinton.”

That last comment ought to go over really well in a county where Hillary has won two resounding victories over the past year and a half. And we all know that everyone loves a party switcher.

Commenter Mikey78 mentioned this as a possibility a few months back. I don’t know much about the demographics of the district, but at first blush this sounds like some kind of ill-fated attempt at revenge: the man who defeated Bonnachi in the 2007 mayoral race in East Rochester is David Koon’s son, Jason. Assemblyman Koon won reelection with over 60% of the vote in 2006 and incumbents almost never lose general elections in the New York State Assembly.

This has the potential to be a very entertaining race. My only question is how long Bonnachi stays in it.

bonacchi has been talkin junk about how dave koon won’t work hard enough to win a ‘tough’ race since, oh, about the time he didn’t work hard enough to win a race. however, even republicans in the non-e.r. parts of the district question the viability of the former mayor.

[...] A few days ago, it was reported that Republican David Bonnachi would challenge Democrat David Koon in NYS Assembly District 135.ÂÂ Today Bonnachi made it official.ÂÂ Reader D has some eyewitness reporting from his press conference: minarik introduced him to a crowd of about 20 people or so. andy meloni, mark florack, mike flanigan, mrs. bonacchi, anthony daniele stood up with him. bonacchi said that albany needs someone to fight for the district and that he has the pulse of the people. taxes are too high (especially gas and property) and local leaders from the county exec on down know how to reign them in. he has thought about his life since losing in november and he wants to serve the people again. he said dave koon is part of the problem in albany and he looks forward to debating him. he was asked if this would look like revenge and he said that he is italian and they don’t believe in revenge, but, no, it is not about revenge it is about public service. he was asked why he chose the village hall for this announcement and he said it was the only place that let him.
