Ender out at MCC

From the D&C:

One of the four remaining candidates applying to become president of Monroe Community College withdrew his application on Friday.

Kenneth Ender, president of Cumberland County College in Vineland, N.J. called MCC and asked that his name be removed from consideration, said Cynthia L. Cooper, public affairs director for the college.

“He just let us know by phone call that he was no longer interested,” she said.

Ender visited the campus April 9 and 10. He was the second of four finalists to take a tour, following Laurence Spraggs, president of Broome Community College.

The other two candidates, Pittsford lawyer and former Monroe County legislator Bill Smith will visit Tuesday and Wednesday while Rochester restaurant owner Dennis Kessler comes to the campus on Thursday and Friday.

It’s hard to be surprised by this. I expected both he and the other credible candidate– Spraggs– would exit the race after Parinello started asking to reopen the entire process.

Quality candidates don’t want to be involved in a highly politicized process where they’ve been given false premises. Specifically, instead of being a fair exploration, looking for the best candidates, it is clear that this has become a politically based search.

Elections have consequences, as it was said earlier on this site. The consequences of the county election of last year include a one-party government, focused more on enriching the party members than in providing the best governance to the county.

But that has been clear since before the election– does the term “Water Authority” ring any bells?

Dave hit it right on the nose. Part of the sound and fury by the Board majority seems to have been designed to make it such an intolerable process that the traditionally qualified candidates withdraw. We should not be surprised when one does.

It’s a sign that a B-A-A-A-A-D moon is rising at MCC. I can’t blame Dr. Ender for withdrawing–why spend so much time and energy to work for a college where politics and cronyism rule and John Parinello runs the show? Still, the fact that one of two qualified candidates withdrew makes it much MUCH more likely that Denny Kessler or Willie Smith will take over. Go to GCC or FLCC while you still can!

Where is the search committee in this process? Are they close to making a decision?
