So, Maggie, this passes for a Boom? More on the Midtown Athletic Club expansion

Apparently our County Executive needs to better help figure out exactly what a boom is.

You remember the COMIDA incentives that allowed the midtown athletic club to expand. I discussed it a couple of times and I assure you it won’t be the last. I mean if Judy Seil is a member - why should it get incentives from COMIDA?

Well the D&C wrote about the expansion where Maggie Brooks had this to say.

“That means room for a lot more healthy people,” said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks.

Not so fast Maggie. Per Glenn William, general manager and partner in the club.

There may be room, but William said he didn’t expect a significant boom in membership. The 3,500 memberships, representing about 6,500 people, may grow by only 200, William predicted.

But the additional outdoor pools and clay tennis courts. Apparently there is a demand for them.

“There’s a demand for it. Members have told us” they want outdoor facilities, William said. He referred to the club as the “third place” in many members’ lives, meaning the place they spend the most time after home and work. Besides a place to exercise, the facility is used to socialize and network.

Of course there is a demand - especially if a subsidy is involved.

WOW a taxpayer supported activity that will enable an additional 200 people to job. Yep Booming times indeed. Our tax dollars NOT hard at work.

[...] Is the County really tapped out? How about reversing some COMIDA grants like those for retail businesses. Remember Mid-town athletic club? Look at the Medley Center. Look at Greece Ridge Mall. Remember that the County and State are dependent upon tax revenues. We know that COMIDA is a vehicle to exempt certain entities. In short, COMIDA reduces the tax rolls. The private and exclusive Harley School is able to fund expansion by refinancing debt via Tax free bonds . Mid-town Athletic club, for example, is getting affluent residents “fit” two hundred per time. [...]
