Marriage Equality coming if Governor Paterson has his way.

We know about the lawsuit - the one where two people were legally married in Ontario, Canada and had their marriage recognized by the New York State Appellate Court. No matter, Maggie is appealing for all the wrong reasons as Ladkiddo points out. Remember, RT’s involvement started out as a surprise that domestic partner benefits were not offered by Monroe County.

Now enter David Paterson. He was supposed to attend the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s leadership dinner to receive an award but New York State Budget work kept him in the capitol.  So, he sent a greeting via video the assembled dinner crowd.  Here is the money quote:

We will push on and bring full marriage equality in New York State. And when we have done that, we’re going to do more.

We’re going to protect young people from bullies. We’re going to protect against the discrimination of people in the transgender community, and we’re going to fight for decent and affordable healthcare for all citizens in this state.

If you will join with me, and if we work hard enough, we can change the face of New York, which will be the catalyst to changing national policy.

Check out the entire video. Humor at the beginning, money quote at the end.

When it happens it will be about freakin’ time.

Aren’t the Healthy NY Plans and Medicaid taking care of that now? How many more government run health insurance plans do we need?

This isn’t adding any new government programs. It’s just making sure that everyone is covered under the existing programs. It’s called equal rights.

Um whtwtrdood - Insurance plans are taking care of all the rights entitled by Marriage? Please

Equal rights is more than health insurance reimbursement. You are breaking the Hospital Visitation rights barrier (Sorry - only immediate family members allowed). You are actually talking about being considered family.

Sorry, I apparently misunderstood this part of his statement: “and we’re going to fight for decent and affordable healthcare for all citizens in this state.” I figured he was adding his voice to the universal healthcare choir.

I know a couple of families that have Healthy NY and it’s one of the best overall plans I’ve seen. They both love it.

Oh - Being that this post is about gay marriage and all I thought you misunderstood this statement…

“push on and bring full marriage equality in New York State”

Maybe with the statement you were talking about he was referring to children’s health insurance.
