Apple to New York City - byte me
Yeah Apple Inc.- I got a nice big Bronx salute for ya.
I know April 1st is long gone but I was reading about this and just shook my head in silliness and actually wished April 1st was a few days away. Next thing you know - Bloomie resigns, Steve Jobs appoints himself as Mayor, renames New York City - iCity.
The D&C ran a piece from the AP in its business section today. The same piece ran in the Orange County Register.
Apple on Friday renewed its challenge to a trademark registration application that New York City filed last May, saying the apple logo was too similar to its own.
Both logos depict a plump apple with a leaf. Apple’s logo is white, with its signature bite mark, while New York City’s proposed trademark is a green, figure-eight outline reminiscent of an infinity sign, with a stem, and the word “greeNYC” under it.
Talk about Apples and Oranges.. The familiar Apple Inc logo on the left and New greeNYC logo on the right. Do they look similar?

The city has applied for a trademark on the logo, but Apple has filed a formal opposition (.pdf) obtained by Wired.com.The Cupertino, California, company calls for the trademark to be denied, claiming the city’s logo will confuse people and “seriously injure the reputation which [Apple] has established for its goods and services.”
New York says: Getdafugoutaheya.
In other news - In Steve Jobs’ first acts as the new Mayor of iCity, he claims exclusive rights to all apples in Garden of Eden. Sues organizers of the Hilton Apple Festival for trademark infringement, Bans the song You are the Apple of my Eye from all music services except itunes.
Yep - Steve - Apples and, more importantly Macintosh’s, have been in NY for a long time. Sounds like you have more sour grapes than anything else don’t you think?

Sounds like somebody’s stock portfolio woke up on the wrong side of innovation.
It’s not as though Microsoft hasn’t lashed out at the “little guy” before.
Take a bite, its organic.
OK - I don’t get it. So , Microsoft lashes out at the little guy and that has something to do with this? Unless Apple is no longer the little guy.
This suit is ridiculous - they don’t look the same.
Of course this suit is ridiculous. Much like suits bought against “little guys” like you and I by Microsoft. Mike Rowe faced similar silliness.
Now I’m not implying an operating system pissing contest here but to single out Apple for protecting a brand seemed odd as it happens everyday.
Equally ridiculous was Kodak and Paul Simon’s “relationship.”
How’s that ol’diddy go………something about Kodachrome.
Anyway brands and copyrights are trashed everyday. I’ve had mine trampled in the past. But it was the little guy, me, fighting a large company. And I’ve dished it to the D&C as well in the sconsetmonkey logo. It goes both ways thanks to the Internets.
Speaking of protecting brands you may want to consider securing the .org and .net domains.
Or you can buy them from me at a later date.
Tick, tock, tick, tock
I understand brand protection. I don’t see the semblance in the Apples here. My point is the suit seems silly, frivolous with out basis given the design.
But no matter we are having fun with it.
Does Sandy mind you adding Upstate to your motto?
BAD CITIZEN MONKEY!
A few years ago, there was a lawsuit between Apple (the record company) and Apple (the computer maker). The end result was that Apple (the computer company) was allowed to use the name Apple, so long as it didn’t involve selling music, in which case its name could easily be confused with the record company. That seemed like a reasonable outcome to me.
So now, Apple (the computer company), hasn’t learned a darn thing from that precedent, want to sue NY City, even though NY City isn’t in the business of selling music. This is an abuse of the court system, and an abuse of plain old simple common sense.
That should say: “So now, Apple (the computer company), hasn’t learned a darn thing from that precedent, want to sue NY City, even though NY City isn’t in the business of selling computers or music.â€ÂÂ
