MCDC on path to becoming a leading change Advocate

Well this is good news - long overdue and welcome news.

Joe Morelle - recently said that his time as MCDC chairman though has been fruitful but not up to his usual standards so he unveiled sweeping reforms and direction shift that he shared in an exclusive interview with RT. The interview was so exclusive it was like we were putting words in his mouth. Anyway here is a summary.

1. All races will be contested. Leaving 3 Legislature races hurt us said Joe - he had an opportunity and missed it. So all races will be contested. Contested with a focus on winning. Money and resources will still be applied strategically but applied never the less. Asked about the County Executive Race last time Joe simply responded “My Bad”

2. Town Committees will be strengthened. We can’t have an entire Town race like that in Henrietta last cycle go uncontested. In fact, we formed subcommittees to reach out to local town committees with the idea to take the best and the brightest ideas and incorporate them into the overall MCDC structure. So there are meeting, lots of meetings - one of which has actually occurred.

3. Multiple candidates will have a message. Joe said - I plan on mirroring the Brighton Model - where town elected officials run as a team. We have a Democratic philosophy that we will share with people and get them more involved in the process. This is especially important in Legislative races.

4. Help the Monroe County Legislators make better charts and graphs. Yeah, I know, said Morrelle - Minarik spends most of his time in the legislature so I figure I can loan out our graphic designer to help our legislators and their new communications director to get their point across to the public it will be worth it in November.

5. We will also update our website and make it a portal of information about local races. In fact when we are done we can offer the Democratic Legislature some help with the Democratic Ledger.

Finally - MCDC will be getting a refund back for is cutting edge youtube campaign. Admitted Joe Morrelle - it was a great idea but our mistake was going with the water authority narrative. We figured everyone has tap water so people would naturally identify with it. Frankly, I thought it was “More than a feeling” but it turned out to be a one shot wonder light an 80’s rock band. I guess we could have energized the base with a unFAIR plan narrative

You are right Joe - we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Not to sound gullible– but is this an April Fool’s prank?

I’d like to believe that the party leadership would be willing to make an honest assessment of their performance to date along with a statement of intent for how to improve, moving forward. And I think that if they did, it might look an awful lot like this.

I think the clue that it must (unfortunately!) be fiction is the “will be getting a refund” phrase– that won’t happen.

It’s too bad. We’d be better served, both as a community and a party, by this kind of introspection, planning, and communication.

davesnyd - funny. I guess subtle humor is in the eyes of the beholder.

Yea the refund was the big clue but

The interview was so exclusive it was like we were putting words in his mouth

There are some grains of truth in the piece - and frankly is a vision of what we should expect MCDC to become. There is discussion of updating their website and the committee meetings to reach out to the town are real. Trouble is all this is slow in coming and the ramp-up time frame or this is NOT ELECTION SEASON. but you and most of our readers know that all to well.

Sorry, stlo7, humor was not my intent– if anything, I wrote what I did with a sense of sadness that it wasn’t true.

I think that how I would best summarize your suggestions (the words you put in his mouth) is that we need the equivalent of Dean’s “50 state strategy” here.

And I think you’re right. Having strong committees in all the towns isn’t just about winning town-level races: it’s also (maybe even more!) about providing the workers and votes for county-wide and state legislative campaigns.

[...] Williams talks about Global Warming. Of course a as April 1st funnies go, a little tongue in cheek of what we hope for MCDC. Come on MCDC - we are pulling for [...]
