Education: Tale of Two experiences
Did you catch this Letter to the Editor in the Democrat and Chronicle? We have discussed the MCC selection mess here. Patronage Sure. Rammed down our throats regardless of qualifications behind closed doors. Feeling the pressure the GOP wants to scrap the process. OH - is it about the money?
In the end it needs to be about qualifications. Laurence Spraggs is one of the finalists for the MCC president job.
Does experience matter? Absolutely. Check this out (my emphasis).
In the early 1980s, I was a student of Laurence Spraggs at an upstate community college. As a “mature student” returning back to school after many years in the workplace, I struggled with coursework and re-entry to academia. Spraggs was the first instructor I had at the college. He spent a great deal of time with students and he encouraged and motivated me to stay in school. I learned to love learning and went from a part-time student with a C average to full-time status with an A average. With his help, I received financial aid, and won a prestigious science award and entrance to an Ivy League university. I give Spraggs a great deal of credit for these successes.
Well - taking this at face value - Able to connect with students sounds like something we want as a core value in an MCC president. How you get this type of experience? Well, by actually working in Academia.
Bill Smith? His last brush with education was ramroding Maggie Brook’s unFAIR plan through the County Legislature. Yeah, how is that working out for us?
