I saw the sign

Kuhl fired back at the MPN for their piece about his mailer. What’s very annoying about his response is that it conflates two different issues: (1) whether people have heard of the stimulus package (they have) and (2) whether or not they understand how the package works. Kuhl writes:

In your March 25th editorial criticizing my mailing about the economic stimulus package you say, “Unless you’ve been conducting a census on polar bears north of the Arctic Circle, you’ve no doubt heard of the federal government’s economic stimulus package.” Well, it must have been a busy year for Arctic pollsters because nearly 200 residents of the 29th district called my office in early February with questions about their rebate check.

Let me ask as simple question: if these voters had never heard of the stimulus package, as Kuhl claims, then why did they call the office to ask about it?

It reminds me of the song “I Saw the Sign”. The lyrics say “I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes.” If your eyes were closed, then how did you see the sign in the first place?

I’m a registered Dem and I didn’t get this… but I know an independent who did… did Randy mail these by party registration?

This isn’t a big issue. It was political, helpful to some and a waste of money, but that’s how things run in Washington

I agree it’s not a very big issue. But I do find all the mailers I get from my elected officials annoying. I get a lot from my state reps in both parties — not so much from the federal ones. Which mirrors the fact that Albany is even more wasteful than Washington in terms of how it operates politically.

[...] There’s been a bit of a hub-bub about Randy Kuhl’s recent mailer about the stimulus act.ÂÂ ÂÂ One fact that has notÂÂ yet been addressed is the following: Democrats in the district are not receiving the mailer.ÂÂ I’ve spoken with half a dozen Democrats in NY-29 and none of them has received the mailer (Rotten mentions that he didn’t receive it yet here).
