GOP operatives lukewarm on Bellavia
We told you recently that Iraq war veteran David Bellavia had decided to run in NY-26. It sounds like he might not be the favorite candidate of the local Republican party (from the Politico):
Bellavia’s decision raises the possibility that two Iraq war veterans could challenge each other in a general election. Jonathan Powers, who served as an Army captain, is one of the Democrats’ leading nominees – and has been a vocal critic of the Iraq war. If Powers and Bellavia were the nominees, the Iraq war would likely become a central focus of the campaign.
“The last thing the district needs is a race about the war,†said one New York-based GOP operative. “If that’s what it becomes, I assure you we’ll lose that race.â€
I tend to agree that the war is not a good issue for Republicans in western New York. The article also describes Bellavia as “well-regarded among conservative activists”, which is shorthand for “scares the crap out of the New York State Republican party.” (This is not a swipe at the NYS GOP — conservative activists scare me too.)
I wonder if this means that someone else will get in on the Republican side.

It’ll be Auberger - once he explains to the FBI why Kodak was forced by Schwabb the jailed assessor to donate 2M of the stolen funds to the town officials to build the Community Center from the pilfered funds… (breaking news in today’s assessment scandal trial)…
I doubt it will be Auberger.
you think Auberger will really weasel out of this scandal, now that the Kodak bribe is being connected directly to the case?
What is it with this fascination you have with Auberger? Did he give you wedgies in Jr. High every day or what?
One more time, reaalllly sloowwlly. The Republican Party Machine out of Erie and Niagara County will have the most say pertaining to who their candidate is going to be.
I also believe it will be someone from Niagara or Erie, just not Bellavia. This area is too anti-Iraq war for his message to work.
Batavia is Genesee County.
Thanks for the correction!

[...] It’s no secret that local Republican operatives don’t want David Bellavia to be the Republican nominee in NY-26.ÂÂ I don’t think his strange comments about Tiger Woods or the slightly nonsensical clip “explaining” these comments have won him any new admirers in these circles.ÂÂ It looks like Steve Minarik may (wisely) endorse someone else soon: Minarik says Republicans will meet this weekend to decide whether to endorse Rick Lewis (of Talking Phone Book) or businessman Christopher Lee; both of Erie County.
