More on Maziarz out in NY-26
As we mentioned yesterday, State Senator George Maziarz, widely considered to be the leading Republican candidate for New York’s 26th Congressional district, won’t enter the race after all. Here’s more detail from the D&C:
The Republicans’ leading candidate to replace Rep. Thomas Reynolds in Congress said Monday he will not run, leaving a hole in the party’s plans for the seat, which could be filled with a host of other candidates.
State Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane, Niagara County, whose Senate district covers much of the same territory covered in Reynolds’ 26th District, said he will pass on the seat.
Maziarz cited family concerns and unfinished projects in his Senate district, including developments at Rochester Technology Park and expansion of the Niagara Falls International Airport.

Monroe County Republican Chairman Stephen Minarik was surprised by Maziarz’s decision.
“I don’t know who we’re going to support,” Minarik said.
Minarik said he’s not sure if a candidate from Monroe County could be successful in the 26th District but mentioned Assemblyman William Reilich and Greece Supervisor John Auberger as possible contenders, noting it’s very early in the selection process.

Whoa-Jiminy! Vindicated!
I only calls ‘em as I see’s ‘em. Where is Pubius now?
This district has a very real Rochester/Buffalo divide. Although neither city is in the district, everyone who lives in it is oriented to one of these cities and really doesn’t know what goes on in the other. It is highly unlikely that the Rochester zone will call the shots here, as the population center of the district is in the Buffalo zone. I know I need to educate myself on the 716 part of the district. But it often feels like we just get to go along for the ride. It would be great if the GOP leans Rochester-area for this one, as that means fielding a weaker candidate, but I don’t see it happening.
As I’ve maintained right along, much to the chagrin of Jiminy, it won’t. The power base for this district is to the West. If Minirak ends up being the one calling the shots on this it’s because the Erie Co. folks can’t find a viable candidate and simply write the seat off.
Come, come now Whitedood…there must be a viable
criminalcandidate somewhere in Erie County, yes? This district is definitely thought of as a Buffalo district. The local news here focuses mostly on NY-28 and NY-29, to the exclusion of 25 and 26.
So a Monroe County candidate has a definite disadvantage relative to a Buffalo-based candidate. That said, Robach might not be a bad candidate for the seat were he to run. But it’s quite unlikely that he will, given that doing so would mean surrendering his State Senate seat to Democrats.
We should probably all remember that Steve Minarik likes to pretend he still calls the shots for the whole state. So he’s likely to comment on a way that overstates his own influence on things.
The weekly tabloid newspaper in Niagara Falls also says Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, may join in the primary race against Powers.
