PD issue on the D&C Blog
Jane Gabriele does a nice job with the PD debacle today and is shot down by the commenters. Have any of these people ever been to a county leg meeting, I want to know? Her information is concise and well researched when she says:
Last year, the defender’s office processed 22,000 cases with only 55 attorneys. With resources spread so thin, it’s reasonable to question whether people in financial need can get true justice. This perception is aggravated by the “broken window” theory of policing — people being arrested for such “crimes” as jaywalking and not having bicycle reflectors. Young African Americans are the most frequent victims of such profiling.
Community leaders arrested at the February meeting of the legislature were concerned about neighbors who might need the public defender’s help. These leaders are known to many of us as smart, responsible, knowledgeable citizens, revered in their communities. They wanted to ensure the impartiality of a decision that will affect the future of their community.
It’s a good summary of what’s been happening. Go on over and have a read and help her out in the comments. (Some of the existing ones are really hard to decipher unless you’re fluent in Stupid)
