First Stop on the road to taking the SD-56 - Brighton Democratic Committee
Guess What? - Frankel won Brighton. Yeah, No kidding.
In the quest to run and defeat Joe Robach in November- first you have to get your name on the ballot. That process started tonight in Brighton where the Brighton Democratic Committee had to choose among three fine candidates- Sandy Frankel, Rick Dollinger, and Willa Powell.
Final tally
- Frankel - 53%
- Dollinger - 45%
- Powell - 2%
That means that Frankel will get 53% of the weighted Brighton votes. Each Democratic committee in the 56th State Senate District (Greece, Parma, those in the city) also has a number of weighted votes, so as the designation process moves forward, each committee will vote and the votes are distributed among the candidates by percentage. The candidate with the most votes gets designated, the others, of course, have the option of running a primary.
Word is Dollinger is running a primary whether or not he gets the designation.
I don’t have detailed notes - but here are a couple of things that stick in my mind.
The Dollinger theme seemed to be that he is the only candidate who can win the SD-56th. Political organization and connections.
The Frankel theme was district knowledge, her successful record as Supervisor, fighting for the needs of the district, Calling out Robach’s hypocracy and her role in turning Brighton red to blue.
The Powell theme was a concession speech (against Brighton’s favorite son and daughter) but she also highlighted she knows the district and her strength is in the city.
So three fine candidates - each with a story. Next stop Greece

greece should be interesting. greece is the reason joe gets elected, so the greece dems might offer an insightful look as to who they think can win. it is too bad that all elections don’t have such good choices though.
Great analysis and summary of the Brighton meeting. I was pleased with Sandy’s win but almost as pleased with the extraordinary turnout. Over 90% of one of the largest Democratic Committees in Monroe County turned out to spend the better part of their evening listening to the candidates, asking questions and deciding who to support. It speaks volumes about the committment and energy of this group of grass roots Democrats, and their passion for electing a Democratic Senator to represent this Democratic district in 2008.
