Curt Smith on NY GOP: “Brain-dead, dysfunctional”
News8 had Curt Smith on as a commentator earlier this week as the Spitzer scandal unfolded. I have the impression of Smith as a GOP-er, so it shocked me a little when he said the following. They were talking about the effect this might have on this fall’s elections. Smith said that he didn’t think it would have much of an effect, and added the following towards the end of the clip:
What a choice the average voter has. You’ve got an immoral governor. You’ve got a decadent leadership in Albany, and then you’ve got a brain-dead, dysfunctional Republican party. That’s quite a choice.
Yikes! Earlier in the segment he said that Spitzer had it all, including “a one-party government”. Uh, no. Lord Bruno (R) still reigns over the Senate, and a one-seat majority might as well be a 100 seat majority since he’s still one of the 3 men in a room.
But I do agree it won’t have much of an effect. I’m sure the GOP will keep trying to make hay out of the situation, however they can. Sad fact is, look at the special election in SD-48 a couple weeks ago, where Dems won in a very Republican district. Where was Spitzer? Unlike Craig Johnson’s special election win in SD-7 last year, Spitzer was nowhere to be found for SD-48. In fact, Barclay (R) tried to drag Spitzer into the race, trying to use the immigrant driver license thing against Aubertine (D).
In an increasingly crappy economy, candidates who are in touch with the rest of us, plus have an plan to change the flow of money– currently flowing from us to the wealthy and corporations– will do well.

curt smith is a gop’r, but he is a sane one. he hates bush for betraying the party, etc.
but i agree. its the economy and if you (as a candidate) can convince voters you can help create jobs/lower taxes better than your opponent, it would probably take an appearance on to catch a predator to hurt you.
I’ve met Curt Smith and talked with him at about last years election. I would call him more of a conservative than a GOP’r, there is a difference we must all remember, George Will comes to mind.
But he is right, NYS’s political situation is all out of whack, the more details emerge about the NYS government and all its failures the more my co-wokers in here NH laugh and thank god they don’t live in NY.
funny, i feel that way about NH…
Curt Smith is a Conservative who, like many, have disenfranchised themselves from the GOP, although they are not Democrats either.
Used to be that conservative went hand in hand with GOP. That changed in a MAJOR way.
I think many Conservatives now look to the candidate, assess the political climate as a whole, and try to find candidates that share their philosophies.
Too bad the Chairman of the Conservative party locally doesn’t feel the same way. But that would require an effort on his part.
He was a speechwriter for Bush the Elder (Good Bush??…Better Bush??…How about the “Lesser of Two Evils Bush”?)
[...] I consider Curt Smith to be a pretty conservative local political commentator. So when I’ve found myself agreeing with him, it’s almost equivalent to my occasional “Holy crap, I’m actually agreeing with [...]
