ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

That was quick. Eliot apologized to the public, but did not, in fact, resign. “I must dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family”, he said. He then said that he would “get back to you.”

I was being a bit facetious — I agree that he’s in big trouble, politically, but only because he broke the law.
That’s the dilemma if you’re a politician. Mistresses will talk if you spurn them, but using hookers is illegal. At least Spitzer was using a high-end service out of town.

That said, I agree he shouldn’t resign. I think he’s incredibly stupid to be doing this, but I don’t see how his resignation would be good for the state.

The only thing making this story perfect would be that the name of the high-priced New York prostitute who travelled from NY to Washington to meet with Spitzer was none other than “our” high-priced public “prostitute” Maggie Brooks.
Spitzer screwed up - no doubt about it. I suspect he will resign, once a replacement team is in place. His failings are more reflective of his personal life. At least he admits it. I suppose he could have just divorced Silva, married, remarried, and move himself up the ladder by constantly looking for the bigger, better deal…but if he did that, he’d be a Republican in Monroe County.

Spitzer has alienated himself on both sides of the aisle. Republicans have been unhappy with him, and Democrats have been unhappy with him. Both sides have distanced themselves from Spitzer. Yesterday he had few friends in Albany, today he has none.
