Maggie loves taxpayers so much, why doesn’t she marry them?
Hey, this gay marriage thing isn’t going away. We’ve covered this issue in-depth (Stlo7 has provided video) and will continue to follow it. There’s another rally going downtown, and Parma picked up on it. Changing Parma has announced a rally for marriage equality for this Tuesday, March 11th from 5:30-6:30. Here are the details:
MARRIAGE EQUALITY RALLY at the
COUNTY LEGISLATURE MEETING
39 West Main St
Tuesday March 11
5:30 – 6:30 pm
If you would like to speak at the County Legislature meeting, you must call 753-1950 on Tuesday to sign up for a 2-minute speaking slot.
Maggie Brooks keeps framing this issue as a taxpayer protection act, much like she framed the “F.A.I.R.” plan and the porn in the library issues. It’s notable that her “protections” end up marginalizing or penalizing large segments of the population in the process.
One D&C commenter called her on the taxpayer protections claim:
As a lesbian taxpayer, may I please apply for tax-exempt status? Brooks is essentially saying that taxes don’t apply to me, so why should I have to pay them?
This is a very good question. So, Maggie, since Monroe County does not currently offer same-sex benefits, what is the answer to the question? I’m reminded of that playground tease “if you love it so much then why don’t you marry it?” Maggie, if you love the taxpayers so much, why don’t you marry them? (Or at least offer them the same benefits all other taxpayers are afforded?)

There is an article in the current Empty Closet about a memorial built in Berlin to honor gay victims of Nazi concentration camps.
Here’s part of that article:
“The Nazis banned homosexuality and tens of thousands of gays, especially men, were sent to concentration camps.
Lesbians were regarded (and punished) as anti-social because they, as women, were supposed to exist in order to produce Aryan children, but comparatively few were killed in Hilter’s camps.”
I read this article and couldn’t help but be struck by extreme saddness from seeing just how backwards Maggie Brooks and her Republicans actually are. Obviously the Germans have come to terms with the vicious actions of Hitler and are now honoring those who were oppressed and killed.
I can’t stop asking myself how it is possible in 2008 to have someone like Maggie Brooks in office starting a new rounds of discrimination, oppression and hate. Those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
So again, I will make this comparison (which I know many don’t like). This area has wonderful examples of people who fought and won civil rights for citizens of the the US. Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass immediately jump into my mind. I’m very sorry to say, but in comparison to Anthony, Douglass and Hilter, Maggie has much more in common with Hitler.
Tom– buddy– I understand your anger, and agree that Maggie’s actions are wrong and politically calculated, but please don’t invoke Godwin’s Law here! I think you make a great case until you mention Hitler.
Tom – stop with the Hitler references – you are wrong and it is counterproductive.
Maggie’s actions are, in my opinion, wrong and short sighted and discriminatory. Hate filled? Truly hate filled? I don’t see it. When Maggie starts to spew hate filled rhetoric resulting in the population knowing the difference between untermensch and ubermensch, when she writes a plan like, Mein Kampf. When we start herding all the so called undesirables into Paetec park and killing them.
She isn’t even close.
Apparently, you fail to see the difference between state-sponsored discrimination and state-sponsored industrialized murder of its citizens.
We in the U.S. have had state-sponsored discrimination in the past. Of course, it wasn’t discrimination back then was it. It was called the way of life. When the Constitution was written blacks were ¾ of a person and women didn’t vote. Over time our societal mores evolved to be more inclusive. Our society learned that this was wrong and discriminatory so laws were changed.
Well, guess what – it is the same with gays – slowly (maybe too slowly for some) our society is recognizing that rights that should exist for a gay couple - don’t.
Slowly our society is changing to extend these rights to the gay community.
The more you press with these false Hitler analogies you hurt your end desired goal inclusion because your argument is easily dismissed by those who actually need to hear it.
The Hitler references don’t help - stop it.
Truth or rumor?
Maggie is on her third marriage?
I’m not sure, which is why I didn’t copy and paste that part of the Parma release. Anyone know for sure?
After the last discussion on gay marriage I have decided to no longer oppose it. I certainly will not actively support the concept, but it will have no affect on who I vote for.
Tom - if Maggie actually starts killing people because they are gay let me know - then I can take you seriously.
Elmer,
I think when Maggie starts killing people, it will be a little too late. Time to speak up now:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
I think you are being a tad bit over dramatic. The people in this country would never allow that. I’m not sure what your problem is - gay marriage and gay benefits were never allowed in this country until relatively recently. One would expect political discussion and opposition on these matters until they become settled. That’s what a democracy is all about.
Elmer,
Yes, perhaps a bit over-dramatic, but my point is, human rights are being violated and that is when you should stand up and be counted. I don’t really think Maggie has any homicidal agenda.
I also agree with the political discussion on this issue-it is what a democracy is all about. It’s also what this blog is all about and thank you for participating.
You are welcome - every liberal blog needs a token conservative
I still don’t think people are actually reading what I said. If anyone here believes Maggie has more in common with Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, then prove it. In my opinion she has more in common with Hitler.
Unfortunately, I won’t stop with the Hitler references because it is my opinion, however, I will stop posting here.
Actually, I read what you wrote. Carefully. I reread it and perhaps you should read it again.
It is your choice not to post here. You are also choosing to weaken your argument if you continue with the Hitler references.
