Big Push for Clean Elections - Updated
Now that the NY state senate, where all good legislation goes to die, is one seat away from Joe Bruno, good legislation blocker extraordinaire, being out of power, it’s all hands on deck to get a good clean elections bill passed in the Assembly.
Clean Elections have been lauded by both GOP and Dem candidates alike. Who doesn’t like ‘em? Party power brokers, because it democratizes access to elected office, instead of needing the blessing of party insiders. Corporations and special interests don’t like them, because it keeps them from wielding power over elected officials trying to do the right thing.
What needs to happen next? Contact your assemblycritters to tell them you support clean elections. Click here to do just that. Want to do more? Call MetroJustice at
Phonebanking is happening at the MetroJustice HQ tonight and Thursday night, from 6:30-8:30 PM.
Want to do even MORE, now that I’ve got you all fired up? (And you should be fired up, Clean Elections is a game-changer. Good candidates would all of a sudden not have to be rich or well-connected. Or sell their soul. What a concept!)
Well, you can always go to Albany with the MetroJustice folks tomorrow, to help lobby our Assemblycritters. They’re joining up with CitizenAction and other good government groups across the state to help the Assembly make up its mind to support Clean Elections. Again, call MetroJustice if you’re interested. (
Seriously– this is a game-changer, folks. Anything you can do will help.
[Update: check out our nifty new CMCE tracker graphic on the right, provided by our lovely and talented graphic artist. Click it to send a message to your Assemblycritter supporting CMCE. You can see that David Koon, who always seems to be ahead of the curve on these kinds of things, has signed on in support. Susan John supports it, but hasn't signed on. Enough feedback from her constituents, and she'll sign on. Gantt and Morelle...come on folks, help remind them it's the right thing to do!]
