Sisters are doing it for themselves

I may be the only person who remembers the Annie Lenox/Aretha song of this title, but, trust me, it’s catchy.

Anyway, Louise Slaughter has a guest essay in the D&C about women in politics. Amidst all the hand-wringing about the troubles Hillary Clinton’s campaign has faced, it’s easy to overlook the fact that, for the first time in American history, a woman now occupies the third most powerful position in our government.

It is truly a remarkable time of unprecedented participation for women in politics. As the first woman to chair the powerful Rules Committee in the House of Representatives, I am so proud to serve with Nancy Pelosi, the first woman Speaker.

This is quite a dramatic change from when I first ran for the Monroe County Legislature in the 1970s. My campaign billboard was covered with black paint in protest to my candidacy. Harassing phone calls would wake my family in the middle of the night. One caller told my daughter I was dead.

[...]

We need more women to run for public office; politics are far too important to be left up to only men. While challenges still exist, the harder you have to fight, the more you know you can achieve. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “It’s up to the women!”

I remember that song (not a fan) but I was thinking the same things Louise wrote only this afternoon because Hillary’s campaign has virtually failed to argue she would be the change by being the first woman president. That in itself is not enough of a reason to vote for Hillary, but certainly her campaign could have worked it in as change instead of relying to the old argument of experience that was failing earlier in the campaign.

Anyone notice Maggie’s totally hypocritical guest essay right by Louises?

My favorite line was “women have to support each other.” UNLESS of course that woman is a lesbian. In that case Maggie will fight against your rights and I don’t think she would have any support to offer.

My favorite line was “women have to support each other.” UNLESS of course that woman is a lesbian or your name is HILLARY CLINTON.

Perhaps Maggie isn’t the “woman” she thinks we think she is?
