I find Randy Kuhl’s comment about feeling like Santa Claus very telling. It’s typical of upstate Republicans. They claim they’re conservative but they love government hand-outs, whether it’s a COMIDA, federal earmarks, or state member items.
I don’t mean that to be a slam of upstate Republicans. The idea that government should play Santa Claus for people may very well be part of a reasonable, coherent political philosophy. But it’s also an idea that is very much at odds with the fiscal conservatism that upstate Republicans claim to embody.

These would be the same people who talk about the “free” market, and self-sufficiency, and all that, as if they’re the obvious gold standard — and ignore those things when it’s not convenient. The folks who are against subsidizing industries — like renewable energy — unless it’s THEIR industries — like nuclear (see John McCain). No handouts for those welfare dogs, but I love playing Santa Clause. Whaaat? I get it. If it’s government money going to people I like, I’m Santa; if it’s to people I don’t like, they’re freeloaders.
