[...] Exile at RT picked up on a gem this morning which I’m only just now catching up to. Apparently, Tom Reynolds is in trouble again for his role as Republican Congressional Committee chairman. I suppose that it’s only to be expected that the man at the top of the sleaze heap should be found guilty of still more sleaze. Hopefully, some will stick on him for good this time.
I am waiting with baited breath for the press conference where Reynolds will surround himself with money as "human shields" so he doesn't have to discuss the results of the audit.

I agree. We have to hope this wounds Reynolds, but not enough to drive him from the race. Powers is the best candidate by far, but he has a much better chance against Reynolds than against some other Republican without Reynolds' baggage.

I can't imagine how little love Reynolds' GOP House colleagues must have for him at this point.

I agree with you. Davis is a Lou Dobbs type. I don't think many here agree with his proposals on immigration.

There's one caveat here: the race won't be a gimme with Reynolds out of it. The district still leans Republican. This is no NY-25 -- where Democrats are heavily favored to win now that Walsh is gone.

It looks like we may have a real chance to retire Reynolds this year. If Obama or Clinton win big in November and have coattails, plus if this scandal gets big, the Democrats have a very good chance of taking the district.
However, the Democrats have to decide who they want to have run. Jack Davis (if he runs) is basically a Republican, with his one "Democratic" issue: protectionism. Davis was a Republican until a couple of years ago when he felt personally insulted by Cheney, and decided to switch parties. On issues other than trade, he is very conservative. He is also a very poor campaigner, as shown by his refusal to campaign by other than TV ads in 2006.
Opposing him is Jon Powers, who is running a very strong, energetic campaign. His views on issues such as the Iraq war, the environment, the economy, etc., are much more in line with other Democrats.
The only thing Davis has going for him is money, while Powers has strong grassroots support.
Democrats in the 26th district should support Powers, and show that the Democratic nomination is not up for sale to the highest bidder.
