The politics of distraction: The Grand Illusion
The politics of distraction are alive and well in Rochester. County Executive Maggie Brooks is running around like the sky is falling over porn in the library and domestic partner benefits, distracting voters away from the real issues. It’s The Grand Illusion.
Step right up folks, come one, come all, it’s the greatest show on earth!
Whenever Maggie is down in the polls she wheels out the wedge issue du jour designed to rally the fearful masses around her crusading persona. Prior to the unF.A.I.R. plan, Maggie took on porn in the library and it made her very popular amongst her core constituents. It was almost as if it was planned, a kind of Monroe County version of a pre-emptive counterstrike, seeing how the F.A.I.R. plan came up so soon after the library issue. And it was all done with such little regard for the supposed Republican principled stand on less government “interference” in our lives. Again, the politics of distraction.
If you pull back the curtain you’ll see that the truth is Republicans love government interference in our private lives when it suits them. But enough with that reality, back to The Grand Illusion. We must protect the children.
Which brings me to…stealing money from our children’s school budgets, the greatest sleight of hand of them all. And now all that money intercepted from the kids can be used to pay for the legal costs that will be incurred when Ms. Brooks “defends” us, the tax payers, from domestic partner benefits legal maneuvers she plans to enact. Abracadabra! No extra costs. (Unless you count that money your school is missing.)
