More D&C storychat nonsense - we wouldn’t really want chat now would we?

It starts with a question. This post started with bigboy asking me a question - Why do some stories not have a storychat? Who decides which story is worthy of a storychat? Let’s look at today’s storychat assignments

So, curfews on kids, taxes, a beef recall and a business expansion by Wegmans…

What other stories were in the paper today?

Well, there is Maggie Brooks’ decision to spend tax payer dollars and appeal domestic partner ruling that went against Monroe County.

There is the Mid-Town athletic club (recipients of a COMIDA benefits) spending 6.6 million dollars so they can expand. Read Glenn Williams, Midtown Athletic Club General Manager quotes from the D&C article.

“It’s a country club in the city without the white-linen dining and the golf course,” William said. “The term we like to use is ‘the third place in a person’s life after home and family and work and business.’”

William declined to disclose annual revenues or membership fees, but acknowledged Midtown is the area’s most expensive fitness facility. Members include local politicians and business leaders and, for four days in 2003, Tiger Woods, who was in town for the PGA tournament.

Um, nothing worthy of discussion about that is there? Let me say it again, COMIDA directed tax obligations away from mid-town athletic club (the General Manager won’t disclose membership cost) and the D&C doesn’t allow a storychat about it.

So two stories worthy of community discussion — domestic partner benefits and private clubs expansing as a result of tax breaks — are not given the discussion light of day?

The common denominator? Maggie Brooks. The stories might be critical of Ms Brooks and her policies.

Nothing worthy of discussion? Please.

Well, to be accurate - The Mall at Greece Ridge is a benefactor to much corporate welfare from Brooks & Co.

In addition to over a half million in COMIDA handouts, they also receive significant corporate welfare in the form of tax breaks from Monroe Counties “Empire Zone” dealings - as evidenced in this D&C story, buried away in the back of the paper. Remember - this is Wilmot - yep - the same Wilmot that brings you the mall fame. The rich get richer in richester… so it makes perfect sense why little Johnny Auberger gets to tell the owner of private property how to operate. Sell your soul to the devil, and you’ll have to pay when he come’s a callin’:

(March 15, 2007) — Rochester and Monroe County businesses received a combined $64.5 million in state tax breaks during 2003-05, according to never-before-released state Empire Zone records.

Calculating the corresponding benefit in jobs created is more difficult. By the most generous estimate, the tally is 3,631. Most of the jobs were created in the city, records show, yet the county zone has seen more dollar growth.

Suburban businesses claimed $12.6 million in tax credits in 2005, making Monroe County the eighth most lucrative Empire Zone in New York state. The Mall at Greece Ridge and Corporate Woods, a Brighton office park, led the way.

Greece Town Mall LP: $9.02 million

I’m glad you posted this article. I was about to post on the same-sex marriage article but then realized that it didn’t have storychat. It’s certainly a topic worthy of debate.

You can start your own topic - some of the conservatives do that when they’re feeling bitchy - wait, that’s always….

It’s not connected to the story, but the regulars will see it when they go to the index.

You will spend quite a bit of time rebutting and de-redirecting, though….
