Breaking: David Gantt arrested
Over at the Public Defender hearing -this is how it ended
I’ll tell you how it began as soon as I write it up. More pics as I process them
The short version is …
The Public Safety committee announced a public meeting for this morning to discuss the process and candidates for the Public Defender vacancy. 75 citizens were in the legislature chambers (the max allowed - more were outside). The GOP moved to immediately move to executive session, the Democrats repeatedly tried to counter with various points of order - The GOP (Mike Barker) called for a suspension of the meeting, move to caucus and ordered the Sheriff Deputies to clear the room. The citizens refused to go. There was back and and forth negotiation with New York State Assemblyman David Gantt and Dems (others as well away from the cameras). in the end the Republicans refused to come out of thier caucus until room was cleared. And it was only cleared with Gantt’s peaceful arrest (I followed Gantt but two others were arrested as well).
I can only suspect that an executive committee session was called, the Dems walked out given justified opposition to the lack of public involvement in the process.

David Gantt’s arrest is shocking and frightening that a government would silence a man of his statute. This is unacceptable and I am surprised that more people are not up in arms about this. I would suggest that Dems boycott the next meeting of the County Leg or walk out and have all the press there to witness it.
I recommend just the opposite. They don’t like 75 people? Let’s give them 7500 people and see how they like it.
