Obama Performance in NY, by County

So, we all know that Obama outperformed expectations last night, but how did he do in NY state, which everyone expected correctly that Hilary would win?

After fat-fingering in the county results from CNN, I put together a little graph showing Obama’s performance, by county. Between that and the liveblogging I did yesterday, I’m just this side of getting carpal tunnel. It’s all worth it, though.
Let’s take a look.

That blue bar 7 in from the left side is Monroe county. Besides Tompkins county (with its “Ithaca Influence”), which Obama carried, Monroe is the only upstate county in the top 10 of Obama performers. I assume this is due to some decent organizing in MC by the Obama folks.

Either way, Dems in general around here have reason to celebrate. Check out the comparative turnout:

The GOP total turnout: 38,917. Hillary alone got almost as many votes as the GOP field combined. Wow. Poor Rudy 9ui11iani finished last, with less than Ron Paul even. He’s not even upstate’s favorite son.

If you look at overall turnout, it’s:

GOP: 38%

Dems: 62%

Obviously you can’t predict a general election based on the primary, but I certainly can’t complain about those numbers. I imagine the difference in level of excitement will provide downticket boosts for Dems across the state.

Nice charts! Great work - that’s exactly the data I wanted to see. You’re correct - we have ALOT to be proud of as Dems! Today is a GOOD day :D

[...] btp at RochesterTurning.com has the skinny on Barack Obama’s performance in the New York State primary, including specifics on Monroe County.ÂÂ Looks like Monroe went for Barack in a big way, though not enough to outweigh the Hillary vote.ÂÂ Thanks, BTPeeps! Nice post -
As far as the 29th congressional district, in Steuben County Republicans represented 65% of the vote, Democrats 35%. McCain’s vote totals were higher than Clinton’s, Romney and Huckabee beat Obama and Ron Paul kicked the crap out of John Edwards to avoid last place.

Let’s compare apples to apples or at least put the numbers in context.

Per November 2007 party enrollment numbers and crossing them with the CNN county results.

The Steuben Republicans had 26% turnout, the Steuben Dems has 30%. Seems more Dems were energized to come out than the Republicans.

So the number of Republican voters over Democratic voters is attributed to the 2:1 Republican to Democrat party enrollment in Steuben county. (31K Rep to 15K Dem)

This make such a sentence like

Kicked the crap out of Edwards to avoid last place.

simply a throw away sentence with little meaning.

Of course, what is not factored in is that Edwards dropped out of the race and any Edward supporters either voting for Clinton or Obama except for the few who pulled for Edwards. Sort of like declaring a Paul victory over Rudy after Rudy dropped out.

This is exactly the information I was looking for last night channel surfing through the primary results. And this morning when I read the paper. Great job, btp.
