Update from NY-25 - Updated
With Tsunami Tuesday, as the pundits are calling the upcoming primaries, rapidly approaching, it’s easy to forget about all the local Congressional races. We’ll be discussing NY-29 later this week, after the primaries, but things in NY-25 are happening so fast we are compelled to write about them now. Thanks to the Walsh Watch for keeping everyone in NY-25 informed about the race!
First off, Onondaga County DA Bill Fitzpatrick will reportedly decide whether or not to get into the race next week. Secondly, there’s increasing talk of Syracuse mayor Matt Driscoll getting into the race on the Democratic side.
I think the deck is stacked a bit against Driscoll. For one thing, Maffei has a lot of cash on hand – $440,000 at the end of the last cycle. For another, Maffei has secured the endorsement of the New York State Congressional delegation. This includes Louise Slaughter, who used to represent the part of the district that is in Monroe County. As anyone who has canvassed the area can tell you, most people in Irondequoit still think Louise is their Congressional rep.
[Update: btp here. Another deck stakka against Driscoll, as Rottenchester recently noted:
the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) announced yesterday that Dan Maffei, the Democrat who challenged Jim Walsh in 2006 and is running again, has been added to their "Red to Blue" fundraising program. This announcement comes before any other Democrat has an opportunity to even decide to run in the NY-25 primary.
This simply adds to the already uphill battle Driscoll would have to secure the Dem line.]
