Stem Cell Institute: coming soon to a city near you
The UR will be receiving $1 million in state funds to help them realize their goal of becoming a leader in the stem-cell field. City News has an article, this week, by Tim Louis Macaluso, outlining the investment the UR intends on making over the next 5 years as they open the Stem cell Institute in February.
The UR award is one of $14.5 million in grants from the Empire State Stem Cell Board, which state lawmakers created last year to oversee research and funding. Spitzer and the State Legislature approved funding for stem-cell research in the 2007-2008 budget, and have committed to a $600-million investment over the next decade. The UR, Cornell, Columbia, and Mount Sinai Medical Center each received $1 million from the state this year.
Th UR is already the largest Employer in the Rochester area. The commitment from the state promises to enhance the attraction of scientists to our city to work in this exciting, emerging field.
“This is going to be very important to Rochester,” Berk says. “Stem-cell research and regenerative medicine will be an interdisciplinary field that draws specialists from all areas of medicine. We think it has the potential to make the Rochester region one of the largest biomedical communities in the country.”
The research is long overdue, due to the obstacles presented by our current administration, but Dr. Bradford Berck, CEO pf the UR Medical Center believes that they will be able to begin the first treatment for people in the next two to three years.
