D&C piece on local radio
The D&C has a good article about local radio today. We’ve written about the issues here many times before — this post by btp is especially good, in my opinion.
I don’t have time to digest and comment on the D&C article, but I want to pass on some very useful info from the article. First, there’s this:
And last week, Rochester rock radio icon Brother Wease, a mainstay on WCMF, was off the air because of contract negotiations with Entercom.
Wease is the only local liberal on radio. His is the only commercial radio program I listen to regularly. There is also a chart of who owns every major local station and I’ve pasted it in after the flip. I think this is something we’ll be referring back to in the future.

I got an HD car radio for Christmas and I LOVE it. WXXI and WCMF both have some great content on their alt HD bands. Of course, WHAM has the strongest Digital Signal out of any station. Which doesn’t do me a lick of good. WROC needs to start broadcasting HD. AM sounds just like FM. NICE!
I spent 20 years in the Rochester radio market in a number of different capacities. When the rules changed to allow ownership of almost everything in a local market by one owner and local playlists of music gave way to “corporate music” I predicted most of what’s happened. When announcers stopped being creative and were turned into robots, what did they expect? If I want entertainment on my car radio now, I plug my ipod into it. When I want news and information, I listen to WROC-AM and reminisce about the days when there were six or seven radio mikes at a press conference instead of one or two. Those were the days…
Here’s more - including school districts:
