Silly letter

Via Fighting29th, The Finger Lakes Times ran a Letter to the Editor [pdf] from the mother of someone whom Kuhl nominated for a position in the Congressional page program. It’s filled with complaints about all the “nasty” things that people have been saying about Randy and contains at least one misleading (if not technically false) statement: that Randy didn’t fly there on a “private jet”. In fact, it was a military jet, which is also much more expensive than commercial travel (I don’t have exact figures for the cost of the air travel associated with the trip, but from what I’ve heard it’s about 5-10 times as much as a commercial coach flight on a per passenger basis).

I find these kinds of letters silly: obviously, citizens have a right to complain when they think their representatives are wasting their money. There’s nothing “nasty” about that.

One other thing: it’s clear the Kuhl office put the letter writer up to this. And that’s their prerogative. But at what point will the Kuhl people begin to realize that they’re better off just shutting up and hoping that this story (which isn’t even all that important in the grand scheme of things) eventually goes away?

(Shudder) I can’t honestly think about congressional pages and Republicans let alone thinking that Randy Kuhl would use the mother of a congressional page to do his bidding.

Didn’t they learn their lesson from Mark Foley?

I am not as mad with Randy as I am with the mother. She personifies everything about Western New York Reps I can’t stand. They believe if they continue their allegiance to a party of disappointment that some day things like their sons or daughters getting into the Congressional page program will happen to them. Suddenly their Congressperson is the Second Coming. It is this kind of narrow-mindedness that keeps these fools being re-elected at the county, state and local level. The fact of the matter is that one day people like her realize that Reps don’t give a hoot about her or anyone else but themselves.

It’s much like a kid saying, unprovoked “I didn’t do anything.”
