Good WHAM piece on Kuhl’s Brazilian trip

Evan Dawson of WHAM just did an excellent piece on Randy Kuhl’s trip to Brazil (it was actually broadcast on Channel). They went over Kuhl’s itinerary in detail and spoke with a biofuels consultant about the value of such a trip.

The piece was very fair and thorough. The biofuels consultant said that such a trip is potentially valuable (she has been to Brazil twice herself to study their production of ethanol) and that biofuels may have a real future in this area, but she also said that it didn’t look like the delegation had actually met with the any of the real experts and innovators in this area. She also called Kuhl’s statement about why he didn’t vote for the enrgy bill “laughable”.

The Kuhl press office put in an abysmal performance. Their justification for the trip was all over the map; they cited terrorism, money laundering, and other things I’m sure I’ve forgotten as issues that Kuhl discussed with Brazilian officials. There’s also a lot of confusion about how much the trip cost and whether or not taxpayers footed the bill for all of it.

As soon as the story goes up on the WHAM website, I’ll put up a link. It’s well worth watching.

Update: The WHAM piece is on the web (just in text form for now, I’ll look for video later.)

Something very strange in it as well… the story contains a link (right below the title of the story) to Kuhl’s itinerary which you can download in MS Word. Once you have it saved and open, check File->Properties. This menu will tell you where this document originated… Strangely enough, it says the Word doc for the itinerary was produced by the company HIRC (Health Industries Research Companies). Why is a healthcare company creating documents explaining the itinerary of Randy Kuhl’s tax payer funded vacation?

Good find! Looking up HIRC.com…here’s what they say about themselves:

Health Industries Research Companies (HIRC) is an independent, nonpartisan organization that conducts strategic market research on trends in health care, pharmaceutical, and managed care businesses.

HIRC’s benchmark studies focus on the marketing needs of pharmaceutical companies, providing market research critical to the development of successful marketing strategies.

They also say:

HIRC syndicated research is available only to pharmaceutical firms.

Which kinda bums me out since I have some drugs I need to market.

Next stop…campaign finance databases…

There are two videos up now… if you go to that link and click play, they will go back to back. The 2nd is REALLY damning… a biomass expert debunks just about everything Randy said!

Switch grass and wood chips! But we go to Brazil, and stay at all the 5 star resorts, talk about sugar in our Long Island Iced and can’t report how much it cost the taxpayers!

Evan Dawson most certainly ROCKS!
