Whassup With The Brodsky Bill?

We’ve reported on the Brodsky Bill previously, the bill in the state Assembly that will help build out the internet into rural areas (spurring business investment) and protect Net Neutrality in New York state (preventing Telcos and internet providers from refusing to send messages they don’t agree with).

One of our RT alumni, Sahar, just wrote in to RT with this update:

Nice blogging recently. You are my number two procrastination tool (after
OpenLeft).

Anyways, so the Brodsky Bill.
Using the awesome Project Sunlight Site, I’ve found the website for the bill:

http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A03980

Two things jump out at me. Morelle didn’t sign on to it, and Koon is the first
cosponsor. Susan John and Joe Errigo aren’t sponsoring it either.

What’s up with that? I can understand Errigo (R) not supporting it, but I would think at least Susan John would. Any thoughts?

errigo would not be ‘allowed’ to sign on if the sponsor doesn’t want him on. that is the common practice to play politics in albany. so errigo (given his district) may actually support this bill. as for morelle and john, who knows?

I ran into Susan John at a Jiffy Lube in brighton last month. She said she reads this site regularly.

  3. I think it would be cool if everyone called Morelle’s, John’s, and Errigo’s offices and asked them where they stood on the bill, and if they supported it, and then write back to RT with the results, a la TPM.

And also call Koon and thank him for his vote.

Also, I front-paged RT again! Awesome. One of these days I’m going to have to write that “I have left RT for Brandeis University, goodbye for now, everyone” post.

Actually, Morelle’s been a leader on the issue of establishing greater broadband/wireless access in New York. Check out AO2435 and AO2460, both of 2007. FYI.

Thanks. Looks like 2460 is for wiring the capitol buildings in Albany, and 2435 is for creating a Broadband Authority to help the buildout. Cool.

It looks like Morelle’s 2435 bill is like the Broadsky bill minus the net neutrality and cable neutrality (among other things) that are in the Broadsky bill. Do you happen to know where Morelle is on net/cable neutraility?
