Crowne Plaza owners cost City of Rochester 5 million dollars

First the story. From the Democrat and Chronicle.

(November 18, 2007) — In a move union leaders said will result in a $5 million loss of revenue for city businesses, the state’s largest teachers union has decided to move its 2009 convention to Buffalo in a show of support for Rochester hotel workers.

The New York State United Teachers, a 575,000-member union which represents public and private school teachers and paraprofessionals, college faculty, public employees, and nurses and other healthcare workers, will move its 2009 convention to Buffalo in solidarity with workers at the Crowne Plaza hotel in downtown Rochester.

So how do you talk about it? Pick one

Rochester loses 5 Million dollars

Teachers Union won’t meet here

Crowne Plaza owners cost taxpayers of Rochester 5 Million dollars

I chose the later. Rochester isn’t the problem. Rochester is on the the receiving end of a bad corporate policy. The Teacher’s Union is reacting to the Crowne Plaza’s actions. In the end, the Crowne Plaza, via its actions, is costing Rochester 5 million dollars.

So - let’s put this issue in context. Intercontinental Hotels Group PLC, - owners of the Crown Plaza among other hotel properties and headquartered the United Kingdom with US. Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia is costing Rochester, N.Y. 5 million dollars because it obstructing efforts of its workers to unionize.

Then again - Buffalo with it union hotels - gets a convention.

Why would we in Rochester N.Y. compete for conventions with one tax revenue hand tied behind its back in terms of not having a union hotel.

Say what you want about unions - but lack of a union hotel affects all of Rochester.
