Progressive Victories in Other States

Here at RT, we’ve been focused on the local elections. There was a lot to focus on, from the towns to the Beebe win to the Nixon and Dunn heartbreaks. We didn’t take the leg but we made some decent progress.

Some other states had pretty astonishing wins last Tuesday. Let’s take a look:

  • * Virginia Dems take control of their state senate - in a state that was considered a reliably “red state” until recently. They also make gains in their House O’ Delegates (equivalent to NY’s Assembly). They also took control of several counties and many other downticket races. For more details, check out Raising Kaine, an amazing progressive political VA-based website that helped inspire RT. What can we learn from their experience to flip OUR senate similarly?
  • * Ohio Dems won in every region and part of the state. Check out Open Left for a rundown of the renaissance of a state that even in 2004 was considered a battleground state. Key quote: “The largest contested city in the state that a Republican won in 2007 is Newark, the 23rd largest city in the state.” Which prompted a commenter to say “GOP: We’re No. 23!” Funny.
  • * Kentucky Dem Steve Beshear ousted corrupt GOP guv Ernie Fletcher by 20 points. Yikes! Many consider it a danger sign for Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, up for re-election next year.
  • * Any other good election results you want to add in the comments?
