Mark Hare deserves a read

The good news in Mark Hare’s latest column is that the tongue in his cheek or the phone in his ear did not get in the way of his typing. Read his column about all the robocalls he received and reflect on the folly of the Republican message on drivers licenses. It is a great column. Just a quick snip below. Remember Spitzer’s plan says the “licenses” are not to be used for identification.

Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn called to say that the Democrats “are putting our community at risk by allowing potential terrorists to get driver’s licenses.”

Well, I’m not a law enforcement pro. So I’m probably wrong. I was under the impression that terrorists — like the 9/11 hijackers — would try to enter the country legally and do nothing to draw attention to themselves. Do terrorists really want New York driver’s licenses that would identify them as illegal?

Then came the news that the County Legislature Democrats are ignoring the words of the 9/11 commission: “Sources of identification are the last opportunity to ensure that people are who they say they are and to check whether they are terrorists.”

Again, I feel so stupid. If we deny the terrorists ID, how are we going to use ID to check if they are terrorists? I kind of liked the fake driver’s license that the Republicans used on one of their mailers — the one with a photo of a man appearing to be Middle Eastern wearing Arab head garments. Wouldn’t it be simpler to find the terrorists if they’d dress like that and display IDs?

Editor’s note - He does mention the do not call list. As I recall, politicians are not banned from calling people on the Do not Call list.

you are right on the do not call list. in fact, if you fill out your telephone number on your board of elections registration form, you will get political calls.
