Vote yes for water in Raquette Lake

Stlo wrote about this a few weeks ago, and I would just like to remind everyone that this proposition will be on the ballot and a small town in the Adirondack Park is looking to us to pass it so they can get the clean water they need.

It’s an amendment to the state constitution, to appear on Tuesday’s ballot statewide, that is as small-bore as they come. It would allow the state to convey one acre of constitutionally protected forest preserve in the “forever wild” region of the state to the town of Long Lake so the tiny hamlet of Raquette Lake might supply better water to its residents.

The state would get back 12 acres to add to state holdings, so the swap makes sense. As does the amendment.

Voters in this region should vote yes on Proposal No. 1 on Tuesday’s ballot.

Retreat - Color of Water

Thank you to the D&C for reminding us of our responsibility to cast a vote for Raquette Lake. It’s only fair.

I really don’t know much about this issue, but isn’t it converting some “forever wild” land so that it can be used for this town? I guess I’m wondering if the town was always there, or if it’s some kind of new development that shouldn’t have been built there in the first place. Anyone familiar with the details?

It’s been there a loooooong time. It looks like about since 1877. It’s a tiny community fighting to survive. Looks like there’s a good exchange of acreage-12 acres back to forever wild for the 1 acre they need.
    fair is fair.

I believe the 12 acres of land that can’t be developed anyway - it isn’t practical.
