Jody Siegle - Schools model what they teach - Democratic processes over undemocratic process
As promised - clips from the Monroe County Democratic Caucus Hearing on October 11th.
Maggie Brooks and her lockstep legislature in a single act decided to overrule established school board budgets and impose hardship on our children. Where is the FAIRNESS in that? If Maggie was half the leader she is made out to be by the Republican Party or portions of the media this would have been a topic of discussion long before the School Board budget discussions. But this is simply yet another example of the local GOP ramming something through without public debate. We have discussed the unfairness and railroading of this plan and the lack of community input, well - Here is Jody Siegle, head of the Monroe County School Board association (MCSBA) in her own words.
The summary is that the MCSBA represents 21 districts of which 18 are affected by this plan. in addition there are 6 others outside Monroe that are partially affected This plan cuts aid to schools in the form of sales tax revenue by 50%. What is important here - As Jody points out in at the 3:40 mark. The school budgets are completed in an open process the year funding models are already decided and here comes Maggie Brooks and her lockstep legislature changing the rules mid fiscal year. Where is the fairness in that?
1:17 - there was no debate, no discussion and the school boards were not engaged
2:21 - Schools have an obligation to role model what they teach. They teach democratic processes - this plan put forth by the legislature was not democratic.
2 :57 - This places an unfair burden on schools. Schools did receive additional funds from the state but that increase revenue was earmarked for specific programs.
3:40 - This plan is scheduled to begin and will affect the school budget in the middle of the school year. This goes against the open and thoughtful budget processes of the school boards
4:54 - no one understands unfunded mandates better than school districts.
