MCDC video clips
The Monroe County Democratic Committee is putting together comedic video clips to illustrate the corruption of the County GOP. Here’s the first one.

Man that Sean Hart is a sexy S.O.B. Very well done. Not bad acting either
Interesting. It’s good to see the party spreading their wings. The message could be a little stronger, but they get the point across. I give it a thumbs up.
Is this what the press conference is about today?
two enthusiastic thumbs up. good clean holiday fun. but in all seriousness, it is a nice piece that is probably as ‘outside the box’ (to use silly buzzwords that really mean much) as politics gets.
Are you kidding? Tell me you’re not all serious.
That’s pretty funny, but I still would have preferred to have seen them working on a county exec campaign rather than playing around with youtube
am i serious? yes. political parties focus on getting to those that vote, since they hold the power. since the older the person is the more likely they are to vote, political campaigns tend not to innovate too much because innovation tends to the be realm of the young. look at campaigns. it is still door to door, mailings, lawn signs, phone calls, and print/tv/radio ads. the newest thing on that list is tv ads. sure, candidates have web sites and blogs and video streaming, but those are still fairly basic concepts that are similar to already used methods.
What a waste of time, it was not funny or informative.
They have time for this but no time to find a county executive candidate??
Whatever. Forget the channel questions; I don’t this message is at all effective, for a lot of different reasons: script, acting, length, etc. It worked for about 15 seconds, then went south, fast. This comes off like one of those radio ads with obvious actors obviously pretending to be real people. Welcome to high school theater. Sorry if others disagree; one opinion, take it for that.
I appreciate them trying something different. At the same time, I’m not all that impressed. This isn’t really my idea of a media campaign on HQs part.
I think the clip is kind of cheesy, somewhat annoying, and rambles on. I stopped watching it about 3/4 of the way through. Perhaps, my expectations were too high?
Would you guys lighten up? MCDC spent virtually no resources on a little venture designed to have some fun. This was no big ad firm doing something here…man, so many critics! I think its great…!
I think there may be a source of confusion. I read this last night:
“Chairman Joseph D. Morelle will be… showcasing a new method of campaigning unlike any other in our region.”
Then I read this post, this afternoon. I noticed that someone else asked if last night’s post was referring to this video. I haven’t seen anyone say otherwise, so I assumed it was referring to this video. Hence, I judged it based on the above claim. I think the above claim is quite a strong claim to make. It doesn’t sound like a little venture designed to have some fun.
Perhaps, this video has nothing to do with a new method of campaigning. If so, I probably wouldn’t have commented on the video at all, and would have taken it for what its worth. A good attempt at a funny skit.
it is the ‘new method’ you mention. it is a pretty good skit and of course they are obvious actors (although they aren’t really actors), how many sit coms would have you think otherwise? its not like those personal story political ads with ‘real’ people giving testimony about how great someone is. in sum, this is fun and i look forward to the 3 to follow.
He’s only glamming onto You Tube because of the debate - that’s hardly “cutting edge”.
All one need do is take a look at the MCDC website, click on news and see the same ads from 2002 in there and realize that Morelle is WAY behind the times as far as utilizing the internet goes.
The Truth is right on. The idea is to attempt new and innovative ways to capture voters attention. The few of us who are avid political junkies will always be overly critical of just about everything and anything to cross our paths. Considering how mundane and repititious the average political tv ad is these days, most viewers quickly change the chanel or press the mute button. Perhaps the average joe might not be so quick to turn away if information is presented in a nonconventional manner.
Whoa, there, big fella. I’m a political junkie, and I’m not critical of anything and everything that crosses my path. Just the stuff that deserves it. I’ve often been heard to say “Wow! That was GREAT!.” But only when stuff was great.
I heard a rumor that MCDC actually hired a professional ad firm to generate this “stuff.” If so, that should make one wonder, and not just “how much?” This is a really crucial time in county politics, with much at stake. Too much so, in my opinion, for lightening up and fooling around and experimenting and looking silly.
That “ad” cost 8K. It was WAY too long, and quite frankly, I would have rather had Beaver die on the hospital table illiterate because he had no health care, and Maggie took the school tax forcing the district to fire his English teacher.
Now that would have been “unique and different”
I like where your heads at, Jimmy!
I couldn’t believe it when I realized that the big press release was over this ad.
Right now the public is paying attention to county politics. But not the Water Authority. Sorry, but I think that except for political junkies like us, that’s yesterday’s news. What the voting public is focused on right now is the tax intercept. It’s a much more powerful issue, hits everyone where they feel it - taxes and their kids’ schools, and reflects the bullying tactics of the Monroe County Republicans. This was the campaign opportunity. And yet again, the MCDC is out of step with voters.
$8000 for this? And if you’re going to engage in satire involving television, how about a show that the prime voting public remembers or can relate to in some way?
Sorry - I’m all for creative advertising, but the first priority has to be to have an effective message geared toward getting the attention of your intended audience. I think this fails on all counts.
Please, oh, please tell me this money was spent locally.
I don’t mind them lumping in the Water Authority. It sounds like they’re going to address a few other issues as well. I think all these issues paint a picture.
I stick by my comments though. If you’re going to put extravagant statements out there, you better back them up, and accept there will be critiques. I happen to not be very impressed by the skit for many of the reasons stated above. Others feel differently, so be it.
What disturbs me is the attempt to suggest this was done for little to no money, which is apparenlty not true. In addition to suggesting that this was never meant to be a big thing anyway. Just something for giggles on the side. If so, then don’t make it sound like its the greatest thing since sliced bread.
“…showcasing a new method of campaigning unlike any other in our region.”
Come on.
The MCWA is yesterdays news. Nothing worse in advertising. Intercept is where it’s at - what is wrong with Morelle? And then to go and mention the Comptroller? Dear Lord…
The should have had a Maggie look-alike mother with a Minarik looking father and the kid should have be tailored to look like the end result of their efforts - illiterate and wishing he could read the paper, coughing and in poor health with no insurance. Heck - throw a crown on the momma just for laughs and a cumberbund on the father. But this?
I love it! Your ad would have been terrific.
Please tell me the money was spent locally.
Too bad they didn’t get the Geico ad people involved.
It’s sad that they are reduced to this to get their message out. If it was part of an overall campaign, that would be nice. But this comes across as the kind of snipping my middle school students engage in.
Funny you should say that. I always say that I can’t see why politicians can’t use the same ad agency Geico does.
The only resource wasted is time and effort.
But don’t you think that an ad that comes out in the midst of voters’ frustration on some issues they consider important, which doesn’t address those issues, emphasizes how out of touch or ineffective the local Democratic party is? I think it becomes not neutral, but a negative.
Charles, obviously these spots were made a few months ago, you can’t just shoot and edit something like this in two seconds. Would you rather they continue to follow up on issues that have come about such as the FAIR plan by throwing another $8000 at some ads and having you guys continue to belly ache about how they’re “so 2 months ago” after they come out?
A good ad might.
Excuse me.. A good youtube video might.
I hate to sound too negative, but this just doesn’t seem like effective messaging. It’s funny, it’s well delivered, but it’s on youtube and only being discussed by those of us on the leftwing blogs. It’s preaching to the choir.
They should have done (and perhaps they did and we just haven’t seen them yet) an ad buy on tv with 30 second spots of this.
Again, it really is a great idea and well executed, but the medium is the message.
