Breakin’ the law, GOP-style
A knowledgeable long-time reader passes this on:
Monroe County Clerk Cheryl DiNolfo (R) has announced that she will not follow Governor Spitzer’s new DMV policy, in clear violation of her oath of office. By way of background, the primary policy change is in regard to drivers license applicants being required to provide a social security number when applying. Under the previous policy, someone without a social security number could apply for a license, but they needed to secure a letter from the social security administration stating the applicant is ineligible for a social security number. Under the new policy, applicants will be required to provide a valid passport, instead of the letter. Contrary to what these extreme, race-baiting republicans like DiNolfo would have us believe, counterfeiting a
letterpassport would be much more difficult than counterfeiting apassportletter. Not only that, but this change will make our roads safer and lower auto insurance across the state. In any event, the Monroe County legislature is set to vote next Tuesday on a resolution which would permit DiNolfo to disobey Spitzer’s directive. Obviously, an act of the County Legislature cannot override an act of the Governor, especially when the Governor is mandated with making policy and the clerks are mandated with implementing the policy.
Just take a look for your self at what the County Clerk’s website has to say about her role: “Acting as an agent for the State of New York, the County Clerk provides DMV services (driver licenses, vehicle registrations, etc.) at three Auto License Bureaus and three mobile services.” The key phrase, which DiNolfo intends on disregarding, is “Acting as an agent for the State of New York”.
I want to ask everyone reading this to call DiNolfo and tell her to stop her race-baiting, illegal tactics. If you agree with the Governor’s policy, it’s critical you call to let her know, otherwise she will simply continue to trample on all our rights.
DiNolfo can be reached by calling 585-753-1645. And after you set the record straight with DiNolfo, call the Governor’s regional office to let them know support making our roads safer, lowering insurance rates and bringing people out of the shadows. His office can be reached at 585-395-8100.
Don’t be a bystander! If we do, the radical right wing has already won.

Done, and I hope to see a whole list of comments with the same word.
Have the Republicans lost their mind? This issue is so arcane. I guess they really don’t have anything meaningful to discuss. I hope the media picks up on this and realizes the ridiculousness of this imaginary issue.
I’m confused by this statement - “Contrary to what these extreme, race-baiting republicans like DiNolfo would have us believe, counterfeiting a letter would be much more difficult than counterfeiting a passport.”
Shouldn’t that read the other way around or am I misunderstanding?
Yeah, you’re right.
Maggie: “Cheryl, we need to talk.”
Cheryl: “Yes, our Maggie, what can I do for you?”
Mags: “I saw you on the news last night. You said we need public debate on the issue of licenses for illegal immigrants.”
Cheryl: “Yes, was there something wrong with what I said?”
Mags: “Cheryl, you know we frown upon public input on issues. It only gets people involved in the issues. They start talking to each other and they might do some research. Knowledge is a very dangerous thing.”
