Hey Randy don’t let the rubberstamp hit you in the head! Listen to the people and override the SCHIP veto
We have covered SCHIP and both Congressman’s Kuhl and Reynolds lack of support of the program. As Louise Slaughter points out the cost of the program, 10 million American children is the cost of 41 days of the Iraq War.
MoveOn.org organized nationwide protests across the nation at Congressional offices. There was one on the Westside at Tom Reynolds office and one at Randy Kuhl’s Fairport office.
Regular readers know of my interest in speaking with protesters. I believe there is value in protest as I’ve written about here and here.
Not one to miss an opportunity I headed out to the MoveOn veto protest at Congressman Kuhl’s office in Fairport. I got there late (freakin work yet again interfered with blogging) but was told the media was there including channel 13 who were interviewing people. The organizers estimated about 70 people showed up. 70 people, both sides of the street. That is a lot of people in a small place like Fairport.
Who are these people? Well, neighbors, businessmen, students, mothers, fathers, veterans, sons and daughters. Just regular people looking to express their views.
We know how Randy fears protesters or thinks that he is somehow threatened. So, I tried to find the most menacing protesters - you know the type the ones that would strike fear in the hearts of a Congressman.
Meet Kiran and Danielle. Yep they look menacing to me. Listen to their heart and souls pour out in their response to the question. Why are you here?
What I can say is these quick 1 minute videos were not rehearsed and both women spoke from the heart.
The bigger question is will Randy listen? Hope so, I mean Bush may be President but he doesn’t live in the NY-29th. I’m guessing most if not all of these people do.
I tried to get an interview with Randy Kuhl or a staffer. Look below the fold for the equivalent to “talk to the hand”.
With Kuhl, it’s “Talk to the handle”. The locked handle.

Very cool videos/post Stlo… It is soooooo incredibly clear that Randy Kuhl is simply in the pocket of Big Tobacco. When you look at his FEC data (specifically his receipts from Altria [Philip Morris] and RJ Reynolds) it’s obvious that he’s voting with his Corporate donors, not the constituents of the 29th District. Randy Kuhl should be ashamed of himself for opposing a tax on cigarettes at the cost of our children.
His ink on his rubberstamp is nicotine yellow this time.
He’s SO glam-r-us

Good Post
Great stuff.
I remember back to when I was a freshman in high school and was talking politics with classmates. I think back to that conversation because I remember exactly what I said. Shortly after I said it, I was embarrassed because I realized how simplistic my statement was. But now when I think about it, I like what I said.
What I said went something like this “We waste money all the time on nuclear weapons, for once I’d like to to see the government waste money on health care.”
S-CHIP Protests…
Local bloggers, and both Rochester and Southern Tier television stations, covered protests against the Bush S-CHIP veto yesterday. Rochesterturning carries video interviews with a couple of the protesters. Rochester’s channel 13 has a short story with…
“The president vetoed an expansion of the program, calling it “too expensive.” Some critics say the president does not understand the bill.”
(This from Channel 13.) I find that a distinct possibility.
Great post!
