Monroe County Republicans stir up xenophobic ignorance — help stop them
This just in from a reader:
This afternoon at 1:30 the Monroe County republicans are expected to announce their intention to disregard a department of motor vehicles policy change recently made by Governor Spitzer. The policy change has caused an uproar among far right republicans, who claim the Governor is going to make it easier for terrorists to attack us. Assembly Republican Leader James Tedisco and Senate Leader Joe Bruno recently have argued his policy would please Osama Bin Laden and the other monsters responsible for 9/11.
In any event, the republicans are seriously misconstruing what this policy actually does. The primary change is in regard to drivers license applicants being required to provide a social security number when applying. Under the previous policy, someone without a social security number could apply for a license, but they needed to secure a letter from the social security administration stating the applicant is ineligible for a social security number. Under the new policy, applicants will be required to provide a valid passport, instead of the letter. Contrary to what these extreme republican will have us believe, it seems counterfeiting a letter would be much more difficult than counterfeiting a passport.
In any event, the policy change mentioned above (a change from the SS letter to a passport) is the crux of the republicans flailing attempts to basically say Spitzer is in cahoots with Osama Bin Laden.
All that brings us to todays Monroe County republican event. It is expected that County Clerk Cheryl DiNolfo will announce her intention to disregard the new state-wide DMV policy. In a September 28, 2007 NYT article, DiNolfo is quoted as saying “I do believe that the state D.M.V. is asking my office to help illegal immigrants to break the law, and this policy is one that cannot stand.”
If anyone can make it to the county office building at 1:30 today, it would be great come out and show your support for Governor Spitzer. But, more importantly, you can come out to reject the absurd notion that a County Clerk, who is charged by law with enforcing the state’s DMV policies, can simply choose to disregard anything she sees fit. Clearly, NYS republicans are taking a page straight from George Bush’s playbook.
As sad and distrubing as all of this is, you can help put an end to this crooked logic employed by our leaders. Come out today and vehemently reject the Bush, Brooks and DiNolfo political philosophy.

Doesn’t refusing to comply with state policy leave a civil servant such as Cheryl DiNolfo liable to be tried as a criminal and/or sued in civil court?
I hope so
