Details of Brooks’ Plan Start To Emerge: Screw the Schools
Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks is unveiling a plan today that calls
for a 50 percent reduction in the sales tax money that school districts receive.
Brooks’ plan also calls for a charge-back of costs associated with Monroe Community College, which is expected to bring in revenue to the county.
She also is asking for a $10 increase in the vehicle registration fee.
Brooks also called for decreasing the county’s tax rate from $9.10 per $1,000 assessed value to $8.99 per $1,000.
The proposals are outlined in proposed legislation that county lawmakers will take up in a special session tonight.
Remember that push poll we reported on 2 weeks ago? The 50% education cuts were the most speculative part, that those cuts “…will be more than offset by record state aid!”
Investing in education leads to a more educated workforce leads to more companies interested in utilizing that workforce. Brooks/Minarik are gambling with a key enabler to creating more jobs in the area, and retaining the ones we’ve got.
That this decision was made in such a partisan Republican fashion is just sad. Monroe County deserves better.

I am shocked by how bad of an idea this is. I mean, this is just horrid. How long have these MENSA members been working on this? Seriously?! They knew there was a shortfall problem back when they blew through the tobacco settlement money. Why not start to make changes then? They’re going to scapegoat this on Albany and Spitzer. I bet Minarik pins this against Spitzer who’s been in office all of 10 months. These people… they make me crazy.
Is the actual text of this plan online anywhere? Or at least a transcript of Brooks’s speech?

I’m loving it. Minarik/Brooks have just given the Monroe County Democratic Party a great, big gift. Just a month before the election they float a plan just guaranteed to piss off their base and rile up the general electorate. Raise taxes AND screw suburban schools? The folks in the ‘burbs will just eat that right up! What next? Maybe they’ll come out as baby-murdering, puppy-eating, Communist, Atheist, Homosexual Satanists.
Of course, Democrats being Democrats, we’ll probably piss this one away, too. I swear, being a Democrat these days is like being a Chicago Cubs fan.
