Sales tax plan, RIP
From John Goodman of the D&C:
Sunday is expected to mark the unceremonious death of Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks’ “community solution” to the county’s budget woes. But the death of this plan means other options, such as deep cuts in services or higher property taxes, must be considered.
Brooks’ proposal called for raising the sales tax from 8 cents to 8.75 cents on a dollar and using the new revenue to help pay the county’s share of the Medicaid tab, now about $158 million a year.
Never fear, says John Durso, pictured below:
Brooks spokesman John Durso Jr. said Monday that there were no plans for a special legislative session before Sunday, the last day lawmakers could opt for a key component of Brooks’ plan.
Durso did not elaborate on what Brooks is considering as a way to balance her 2008 budget, which must be unveiled by Nov. 15. “All options remain on the table except raising property taxes,” he said.

The reports of this plans death may be greatly exaggerated.
