From R News, RG&E’s merger causes concern for customers

The merger of RG&E’s parent company with Spanish power distributor Iberdrola has some customers worried that the Russell Station plant will stay right where it is and no upgrades will be done.

Residents and environmentalists are worried Iberdrola won’t upgrade Russell Station from a polluting, coal-fired plant, to a more environmentally-friendly natural gas plant.

(snip)

U.S Senator Charles Schumer says he will work to block the merger if Iberdrola does not spend $600 million to upgrade the plant. The senator also wants assurances the company will provide reliable and affordable power to Rochester.

“This area could become starved for electricity. You know what happens when an area is starved for electricity. The rates go up, the number of jobs in the area go down as well,” says Schumer.

And as we know, it’s all about jobs right now. According to the article, Iberdola is a leader in wind energy, which would make them appear to be progressively leaning toward renewable energy, and as you could tell, from a previous post, I’m all for that. But local wind-farms may not be what they’re cracked up to be (and I will report back on this as my research continues). Let’s hope that whatever direction this merger takes, that direction will increase employment in this job starved market.
